Stones skipping across the water,
Breathing, rising then falling
Lilies bow their opulent,
trembling heads to
the petulant little egret
A practiced flick, then a flourish of silver scales
Eyes flutter open, a dainty lash o’ feathered
Sink, swim and then gasp
Alas, but he died
Laughing

I love the last line, “laughing.” What a brilliant little surprise; it leaves me with mixed feelings– in a good way!

Ah, thank you! This poem’s a strange one. The last line was inspired by a song title, and it seemed to fit somehow…
