Sappho

Charles-August Mengin – Sappho (1877)

I yearn
to enter your world;
to seep through hidden cracks
where my curious fingers would
greedily pry through liquid flesh

And so I wished –

To witness the star
silent and unyielding
through strong eyes;

To sing a sestina
emotion pouring forth
through sonorous voice;

To crouch furtively
wading in mud
through little, busy minds…

But I sit, humming
and observe quietly instead –

the secret, inner workings
between darkest, precious lives
